# Energy per Unit: Overview

**What is Energy per Unit?**

Energy per unit is a measure of energy efficiency. It shows how much energy is used to produce one unit of output (for example, kWh per kg or per piece). Tracking this helps to identify improvement opportunities and to monitor performance over time.

**Two ways to calculate Energy per Unit**

You can calculate Energy per Unit in two ways, depending on whether you want one-time snapshots or continuous monitoring.

1\. Snapshot calculation

- When to use: For precise energy per unit calculations, for example for a specific batch or production run. Ideal for processes with multiple steps and varying durations.
- Description: Create an ad-hoc calculation with defined start and end times. Include multiple energy-consuming and production-counting assets, even if they have different time intervals. If you don’t have counting sensors, manually enter the produced output.

2\. Recurring calculation: Energy efficiency KPI

- When to use: For continuous monitoring of energy efficiency over time, such as at plant, production line, or asset-type level.
- Description: Create a recurring calculation (energy efficiency KPI) that tracks energy per unit continuously, revealing long-term efficiency trends. This type of energy efficiency KPI is also known as an Energy Performance Indicator (EnPI) under the ISO 50.001 energy management standard.
